Full-Spectrum vs Isolate CBD: What's the Difference?

The Three Types of CBD Extract

When you shop for CBD, you'll often see terms like full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate. These refer to the type of extract used in the product — and the difference between them matters more than you might think.

What Is Full-Spectrum CBD?

Full-spectrum CBD is an extract that retains all of the naturally occurring compounds found in the hemp plant, including:

  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Other minor cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC, and more)
  • Terpenes — the aromatic compounds that give hemp its distinctive scent and may contribute to its effects
  • Trace amounts of THC (below 0.2% in the UK, the legal limit)
  • Flavonoids and plant nutrients

The idea behind full-spectrum is the entourage effect — the theory that cannabinoids and terpenes work better together than in isolation. Many users and researchers believe that the combination of compounds produces a richer, more balanced effect than CBD alone.

What Is CBD Isolate?

CBD isolate is exactly what it sounds like: pure CBD, and nothing else. All other plant compounds, including THC, terpenes, and minor cannabinoids, have been removed during processing. The result is a white, crystalline powder that is often 99%+ pure CBD.

Isolate is ideal for those who:

  • Want to avoid any trace of THC entirely
  • Prefer an unflavoured, neutral product
  • Are sensitive to other plant compounds

What Is Broad-Spectrum CBD?

Broad-spectrum sits between the two. It retains most of the hemp plant's compounds — including terpenes and minor cannabinoids — but has had THC removed. It aims to provide some of the entourage effect without any THC exposure.

Which Is Better?

There is no single "best" option — it comes down to your personal goals and preferences:

  • Full-spectrum — Best for those who want the most complete hemp experience and are comfortable with trace THC levels (well within UK legal limits).
  • Broad-spectrum — A good middle ground for those who want compound variety without any THC.
  • Isolate — Ideal for those who want a pure, controlled CBD dose with no other variables.

At Northern Lights CBD, our oils are crafted with quality and transparency in mind. Check the product descriptions on each of our CBD oils to see which extract type is used.

Does the Type of Extract Affect the Taste?

Yes — full-spectrum and broad-spectrum oils tend to have a more earthy, herbal taste due to the terpenes present. CBD isolate products are typically neutral in flavour. If taste is a concern, our CBD gummies offer a more palatable option for daily use.

A Note on UK Legal Standards
